This verse also begins with the common Hebrew conjunction. Revised Standard Version renders it but, focusing on the contrast between what God will do while Solomon lives and what he will do when Solomon has died. Contemporary English Version says “Then” since it understands verse 35 as simply a logical outcome from the previous verse.

I will take the kingdom out of his son’s hand: For the figurative language here, see the comments on the previous verse. Since the last person mentioned in the previous verse is King David, it may be helpful to say “Solomon’s son” (so Good News Translation, Bible en français courant, Parole de Vie), rather than translate literally his son.

Will give it to you, ten tribes: Jeroboam was last mentioned by name in verse 31. Some translations, therefore, add his name here after the singular pronoun you; for example, Bible en français courant and Parole de Vie say “I will give to you, Jeroboam, ten of the tribes.”
