We recommend a paragraph break here, as in Revised Standard Version.
Then Jonathan came to Jerusalem and read the letter in the hearing of all the people and of the men in the citadel: The letter apparently reached Jonathan at his headquarters in Michmash (1Macc 9.73). He immediately went to Jerusalem, and publicly read the letter in some central place near the fort, where it could be heard by the soldiers (and presumably the prisoners) in the fort as well as a crowd of people standing around him. An alternative model for this verse is:
• Jonathan took the letter to Jerusalem and read it to all the people and the [Syrian] soldiers in the fort.
