Translators may insert a paragraph break here, as in Revised Standard Version.

So Demetrius the king sat on the throne of his kingdom, and the land was quiet before him: Compare verse 38. We hesitate to follow Good News Bible in saying that “Demetrius was firmly established as king,” since his rule was challenged by Trypho soon after this. A better model for this verse is:

• So Demetrius still remained the king, and the country was at peace again [or, there was no trouble in the land].
