Translation commentary on 1 Maccabees 5:10

Good News Bible has combined verses 10-11. It works, but the resulting structure may be more difficult for some readers to follow than the original. We follow here the order as in Revised Standard Version. Some English translations indent the whole letter (so New English Bible, Revised English Bible, New Jerusalem Bible). Translators must decide what will be easier for their readers to understand.

And sent to Judas and his brothers a letter which said may be rendered “and they sent a letter to Judas and his brothers. It said.”

The Gentiles around us have gathered together against us to destroy us: Much the same language is used in the previous verse. Here translators could say “The Gentiles around us [or, in this area] have assembled an army [or, have banded together] to destroy us.”
