The people rejoiced greatly and celebrated that day as a day of great gladness: The Jews celebrated their great victory on that day with much joy. According to the next verse, they set the day aside as an annual celebration. An alternative model for this verse is:

• The Jews celebrated with great joy on that day of their victory.
