I answered and said: Ezra addresses the angel Uriel here. Since he has been speaking to God in 2 Esd 5.38–6.10, translators should clearly indicate that Ezra is now speaking to Uriel; for example, this quote frame may be rendered “I now asked the angel Uriel” or “I turned and asked the angel Uriel.” Contemporary English Version has “I said to Uriel the angel.”

O sovereign Lord, if I have found favor in thy sight: For the Latin phrase rendered sovereign Lord (dominator domine) as addressed to Uriel, see the comments on 2 Esd 4.38. For if I have found favor in thy sight, see 2 Esd 4.44. If necessary, this clause may be shortened to “please.” However, in some languages such flowery language is natural.

Show thy servant the end of thy signs which thou didst show me in part on a previous night: With the phrase thy servant Ezra refers to himself, showing more deference to God (see the comments on 2 Esd 5.45). See 2 Esd 4.51–5.13 for the signs that Uriel showed Ezra on a previous night.

A model that combines verses 11 and 12 is:

• After this I said [or, I turned and said] to the angel Uriel, “O lord and master, several nights ago you showed me some of the signs of the end. Please now, show me the rest of them.”
