Translation commentary on Jeremiah 13:16

Give glory to: The noun glory is here used in the sense of “praise” or “Honor” (Good News Translation).

Although some translators find it easier to render before he brings darkness as “before it gets dark,” most try to show that it is God who will bring on the darkness, as in “before he causes it to be dark.”

Twilight mountains means “the twilight on the mountains” (Die Bibel im heutigen Deutsch). Good News Translation translates “on the mountains,” because the phrase follows closely after the clause “before he brings darkness,” which would then assume that the mountains are covered with darkness. Otherwise, translators can say “before he brings on darkness and you stumble in the poor light [or, twilight] on the mountains.”

Deep darkness is parallel with gloom, and translates a single word in Hebrew; gloom is first used in 2.6, where it is rendered “deep darkness.” If deep is a problem, translators can say “great darkness,” as in “before he turns the light you are longing for [or, looking for] into a great darkness.”
