Examine: since this is, in effect, a reexamination, some languages will require the use of an expression like “examine again” or “examine a second time” in this verse.

In his eyes: that is, in his judgment, or as Good News Translation has it, “if in his opinion.”

Is checked: the word checked here means “unchanged” (Moffatt). Good News Translation has “looks the same,” implying that it appears as it had seven days earlier. It has not improved, but neither has it become worse. Some other possibilities conveying the same idea may be “remains as it was” (New English Bible), “is unchanged” (New International Version), or “persists” (New Jerusalem Bible). This has practically the same meaning as the phrase that follows, and … has not spread. The latter is merely a negative way of saying the same thing. So in some languages the two phrases may be translated by a single expression.

Seven days more: an additional period of seven days’ isolation is required of the sick person. See comments on verse 4.
