And those who had returned from the captivity acted in accordance with all this: This short sentence begins the description of how those who had returned from the captivity (those who were present at the meeting; see verse 3) carried out the plan to get rid of their non-Jewish wives. Good News Bible makes the function of this sentence clear by beginning a new paragraph here, which we recommend. Possible models for this verse are:

• This is how the men who had returned from exile dealt with this problem.

• This is how the returning exiles solved the problem of men with non-Jewish [or, foreign] wives.
