Translation commentary on 1 Maccabees 5:49

We recommend that translators begin a new paragraph here (so Good News Bible, Contemporary English Version).

Then Judas ordered proclamation to be made to the army: This is simply the next event in a series, so Then rather than “So” (Good News Bible) is probably the correct connector. Judas’ command here is only to the soldiers, not to the civilians being escorted. Good News Bible adds “except the fighting men” here, but this should not be done.

That each should encamp where he was: This order means that no time can be spared for the ordinary procedure in setting up camp; they were going to have to fight then and there.

An alternative model for this verse is:

• Then Judas commanded his fighting men that each one of them should prepare for battle right where he stood.
