Good News Bible has a paragraph break here, which is unnecessary.

But some of the garrison escaped from the siege: The garrison is the group of men in the fort. For this clause Good News Bible has “But some of the men under siege escaped.” However, it is understood from the previous verse that the fort is besieged, so we may say “But some of the enemy soldiers in the fort escaped.”

And some of the ungodly Israelites joined them: The ungodly Israelites are first mentioned in 1Macc 1.11, where they are called “lawless men” (see the comments there). The Greek expressions are different, but the same people are intended. Good News Bible has “the renegade Jews.”
