Translation commentary on 2 Chronicles 7:6

The priests stood in their posts: Moffatt says “The priests stood in their proper positions,” and Contemporary English Version has “The priests were in their assigned places” (similarly Good News Translation).

The Levites also, with the instruments for music to the LORD …: While the specific instruments used are not named, it is very likely that they included a variety of types including stringed instruments such as harps, as well as flutes and cymbals (see 1 Chr 15.16).

Which King David had made for giving thanks to the LORD: See the comments on 1 Chr 23.5.

For his steadfast love endures forever: See 2Chr 7.3. Good News Translation understands this clause to be a hymn title. However, most versions take it to be a direct quotation of the actual words that the Levites were singing. In either case there is implied information that may need to be made explicit in other languages (see the model below).

Whenever David offered praises by their ministry: The pronoun their refers to the musical instruments, so NET Bible renders this clause as “which [the instruments] were used by David when he offered praise.” David himself did not play the instruments, but had the Levites do it, so this clause may be rendered “whenever David had the Levites use the instruments to praise God.”

Opposite them the priests sounded trumpets: The priests had been given the responsibility to sound the trumpets (see 1 Chr 15.24). For trumpets see the comments on 1 Chr 13.8. Good News Translation shifts forward the idea that the priests were opposite the Levites, saying “and facing them [the priests] stood the Levites.”

This whole verse may have to be restructured in some languages. A possible model for this is the following:

• The priests took their assigned places, and so did the Levites. On one side the priests blew the trumpets. The Levites on the other side were singing praise to the LORD, saying, “His faithful love endures forever!” They accompanied the singing with music from the instruments King David had made for praising the LORD. And all the people of Israel were standing.
