Translation commentary on 2 Esdras 5:5

Blood shall drip from wood: “Trees” (Good News Bible) are meant here rather than cut wood.

And the stone shall utter its voice: The Latin word for voice may refer to any kind of sound, not necessarily a human voice. So this clause may be rendered “Stones will make noises” or “Rocks will cry out” (similarly Contemporary English Version).

The peoples shall be troubled: The Latin verb translated be troubled is similar in meaning to “thrown into confusion” in the previous verse. A model for this clause is “The people in all the countries will be completely confused [or, in a great panic].”

And the stars shall fall: The meaning of the Latin text is unclear here (so Revised Standard Version footnote). We recommend changing the text to read “and the paths of the stars will change.” Stars changing their courses would be a sign of a drastic disordering of the universe.

An alternative model for this verse is:

• Trees will drip blood. Stones will makes noises. The nations will be in confusion [or, in a great panic]. The stars will move in unpredictable ways [or, ways that we do not understand].*
* The stars will move in unpredictable ways; The Latin of this sentence is unclear.
