This verse continues the usual wording to indicate a change in power. For slept with his fathers, see 1 Kgs 1.21 and 2.10; for reigned in his stead, see 1 Kgs 11.43 and 2 Kgs 8.24. In the light of the two previous changes in power in Israel which were violent, it is significant here that Menahem was succeeded by his son and not by an assassin.
