Verses 8-9 are almost identical to 3.18-19 since they are a summary of the responsibilities God first gave to Ezekiel in his role as watchman for sinful people. As one expects in a summary, these verses are a bit shorter than the passage in chapter 3, and translators will need to make sure they are clear what expressions have been left out. On the other hand, a couple of new expressions have been inserted.
If I say to the wicked: See 3.18.
O wicked man, you shall surely die: The vocative expression O wicked man is not in 3.18. Many translations, especially those that use indirect speech here, omit it for smoothness (so Good News Translation, Contemporary English Version, New Living Translation, Revised English Bible, New American Bible). This is acceptable for those languages where such repetition is awkward, and translators will do well to be guided by what is most natural in their own language. For you shall surely die, see 3.18.
And you do not speak to warn the wicked to turn from his way: This expression is shorter than its parallel in 3.18. New Century Version says “but you don’t speak to warn the wicked to stop doing evil.”
That wicked man shall die in his iniquity: See 3.18.
But his blood I will require at your hand: See 3.18.
