Translation commentary on Sirach 24:21

Those who eat me will hunger for more, and those who drink me will thirst for more: Good News Translation words these lines as commands. Another way to handle them is “If you eat me, you will hunger for more; if you drink me, you will thirst for more.” Translators who feel that the imagery of eating Wisdom, eating the speaker, is too difficult will want to express the idea involved without using the imagery. We could say “One taste, one sip, of what I have to offer, and you will want more.” But for those who can keep the imagery, Contemporary English Version‘s model here is helpful:

• But the more of me
that you eat and drink,
the more you will want.
