For when the dead had already fallen on one another in heaps may be rendered “Piles of dead bodies were everywhere” (Contemporary English Version).

He intervened and held back the wrath, and cut off its way to the living: Intervened is literally “stood between.” It is to be taken literally; see Num 16.48. Aaron stands between the dead and the living, to keep the “punisher” away from the living. The word used for wrath means “attack,” and that word can be used here. The scene could be described as follows:

• He stood facing the piles of dead bodies and kept the attack [or, epidemic] from coming any closer to those who were still living.
