Are not the evils which have befallen us sufficient?: With this rhetorical question the people express that they have suffered without Ezra’s guidance, and are afraid that if he does not return they will suffer more. Good News Bible provides a good model for this verse, but for languages that cannot use a rhetorical question here, another possible model is:

• We certainly have suffered enough already!
